Description
The Newmar ERC-12-35 Emergency Relay/Charger provides automatic battery backup for critical 12V communication equipment when the normal DC power supply fails. When loss of supply voltage is detected, a fast-acting SPDT relay transfers the connected equipment to a standby battery so operation can continue without manual switching.
When the primary supply returns, the relay transfers the load back and disconnects the backup battery from the equipment. During normal operation, a small portion of supply current is directed to the standby battery as a maintenance trickle charge. Typical float-trickle current is about 0.1A, with battery float voltage maintained approximately 0.7V below the power-supply voltage.
The relay is rated for 30A continuous and 35A intermittent current over a 10.0-14.5V DC input range. For longer cable runs, heavier conductors are recommended to minimize voltage drop, ranging from approximately 8 AWG at 5 feet to 4 AWG at 15 to 20 feet based on the complete circuit length.
The ERC can be mounted in several orientations but should be located close to the standby battery and away from areas where explosive battery gases may accumulate. For critical radios and communication systems that need automatic switchover to backup battery power, the ERC-12-35 provides transfer switching and maintenance charging in one compact device.
