Cold Steel All Terrain Chopper Full Tang Machete

Description

The Cold Steel All Terrain Chopper carries a 21.5-inch matte 1055 carbon steel blade with a full tang, set in a black polypropylene handle, with a sheath. Made in South Africa.

1055 is a plain carbon steel with about half a percent carbon, deliberately on the softer side. That is what a chopper wants: it bends rather than chips when it meets a knot, and it comes back to sharp with a file rather than needing a stone and patience. Full tang matters more here than on almost any other blade shape, since a 21.5-inch chopper loads the joint between blade and handle hard on every strike.

South Africa has a long machete-making tradition tied to agricultural work, and the polypropylene handle is chosen for the same reason as the steel: it takes abuse and costs little to replace.
